What it is actually like to live in Central Oahu

Central Oahu covers the plateau between the two mountain ranges: Wahiawa, Whitmore Village, Waipio, Waikele and the areas around Schofield Barracks. It is the part of the island where you get the most house for the money, and where a lot of military families land.

Wahiawa is the most affordable town on this part of the island, with older homes and a small town feel, sitting right next to Schofield. Waipio and Waikele are closer to the H1 and to Pearl Harbor, with more townhomes and newer subdivisions. Waikele also has the outlet center and easier freeway access than most of central.

Who Central Oahu suits

Buyers who want a single family home with a yard and are willing to trade proximity to town for it, and military families at Schofield, Wheeler or Pearl Harbor. If you are soldier stationed at Schofield, living in Wahiawa can mean a commute measured in minutes.

The honest trade off

Distance from town, and the H1 and H2 merge that everyone who lives up here complains about. It is a real factor and it is worse than the map suggests. Drive it before you buy.

Wahiawa in particular is cooler and wetter than the leeward side and has a different feel from the newer planned communities. Some buyers love it, some find it too quiet. Spend an afternoon there.

If you are using a VA loan

Central Oahu has strong VA approved inventory, with 60 approved projects in Mililani and 56 in Wahiawa, reflecting decades of military families buying here.
