What it is actually like to live on the Leeward Coast
The Leeward Coast runs from Kapolei out through Nanakuli, Maili, Waianae and Makaha to the end of the road. It is the most affordable stretch of Oahu, it is dry and sunny nearly all year, and it has some of the best beaches on the island with a fraction of the crowds.
Kapolei at the near end functions as Oahu’s second city, with newer construction, shopping and its own job base. Further out, Nanakuli, Maili and Waianae are older and considerably less expensive, with a strong local community. Makaha at the far end has a mix of homes and some condo inventory near the golf course and the beach.
Who the Leeward Coast suits
Buyers who want the most house for the money on Oahu, people who work in Kapolei or at the west side resorts, and anyone who genuinely prefers sun and dry heat to the rain on the windward side.
The honest trade off
Distance. Waianae to downtown Honolulu is a long commute and it is not a pleasant one at rush hour. If you work in town every day, be realistic about what that does to your life over several years. If you work on the west side, none of that applies and the value here is hard to beat.
The area has a strong local identity and some neighborhoods are much more tightly knit than others. Spend real time here before buying rather than deciding from listing photos.
