What it is actually like to live in Kaneohe
Kaneohe is green. That is the first thing anyone notices, and it is the reason people who live here tend to stay. The Koolau range sits right behind the town, the bay is in front of it, and the whole area feels a world away from Honolulu despite being about half an hour over the pali.
Housing is mostly single family, much of it built from the 1960s through the 1980s, on real lots with real yards. There are condos and townhomes, particularly closer to Windward Mall and along Kaneohe Bay Drive, but the character of the area is detached homes with gardens.
Who Kaneohe suits
Families who want space and greenery over walkability, and anyone stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, which is right there at Kaneohe Bay. For MCBH families the commute is minutes rather than an hour, and that alone makes Kaneohe worth serious consideration.
The honest trade off
It rains. Considerably more than town, and considerably more than Ewa. If you are coming from a dry climate this is the single biggest adjustment, and it affects everything from mildew to how often you are outside. Some homes in the valleys get very little direct sun.
The other consideration is the pali and likelike commute. Both tunnels close occasionally for accidents and weather, and when one closes the other backs up. If you work in town, build that into your expectations.
